Hello and welcome! Ready to create a cracking ScratchJr jump game on your iPad? This full tutorial is your complete guide to building a fantastic Frog Jumping Game, just like the one demonstrated in the video [00:00].
The challenge is simple: get the frog to jump over a rolling ball and score points. If you mistime your jump, it’s ‘Game Over’ [00:18]! We’ll show you exactly how to set up the code, from the basic movement to a fully functioning scoreboard and a winner’s screen.
Here is a short walk through the jumping frog game I made in ScratchJr:
Here is the full ScratchJr Jump Game Tutorial, the instructions and a PDF are below the video:
Part 1: Building the Initial ScratchJr Jump Game
This section focuses on programming the basic actions and collision detection for your game.
1. Coding the Ball: Get it Rolling!
You’ll need to set up the ball sprite to roll steadily across the screen. This is the main obstacle your frog must avoid.
2. Coding the Frog: The Perfect Jump
The frog is the star of your game! Programme it to perform a jump when the player presses on it. Crucially, you must also add code to ensure the frog resets its position [00:14] after a successful jump, ready for the next one.
3. Implementing the Game Over Logic
This is where your creation becomes a proper game!
- Frog Disappearance & Shocked Frog: If the ball touches the frog, the original frog should disappear. You’ll then make a second, ‘shocked’ frog sprite appear to signal the loss.
- The End of Game Screen: Create a separate ‘Game Over’ screen and connect the collision event to automatically switch to this screen.
👏 Brilliant! At this stage, you have completed the initial ScratchJr jump game and have a playable prototype!
Part 2: Advanced Features and Polish
Now let’s add some advanced features to make your scratchjr jump game even more engaging.
4. Adding a Ghost Effect
Instead of making the frog simply disappear on a collision, a more advanced feature is to programme the frog to turn into a ghost effect when touched by the ball. This can provide a smoother visual transition before the ‘Game Over’ screen appears.
5. Creating and Connecting the Scoreboard
A scoreboard is essential for tracking progress.
- Set up a counter variable.
- Programme the scoreboard to auto-update with every successful jump [00:29].
- In this particular version, the game goal is to get to a score of five to win [00:43]!
6. Designing the Winner’s Screen
If your player manages to get to a score of five, they deserve a prize! Create a dedicated ‘Winner’s Screen’ and programme the game to switch to it when the target score is achieved.
🥇 Congratulations! You have now made the full and complete version of the ScratchJr jump game!

How to get extra help or how to ask a question
1 :1 5
on my website email me and I will answer you as quickly as I can first let’s open up the scratch app and start a new
1 :2 4
project press on the cat until the cross appears and then click on that to delete
1 :3 0
now let’s choose a background by going to the background button and selecting the farm background and then click the
1 :3 7
tick to select next we’re going to code the ball going across the screen from the right hand side to the left hand
How to code a ball moving across the screen in ScratchJr when creating a jump game
1 :4 3
side so let’s add the character first of all by clicking on the character button
1 :4 8
scroll down and find the ball there it is select the ball and
1 :5 5
then click the tick button to select let’s press on the ball and then move it to the right hand
2 :0 3
side of the screen there we go now we want to make the ball move across the screen when the green flag is pressed so
2 :1 1
we go to the yellow category select the green flag and drag it down next we’re going to go to the blue category grab
2 :1 8
the move left block and connect it to the green flag block and then we want to
2 :2 4
go to the red category we don’t want the program to stop because we want the ball to keep moving so we’re going to click
2 :3 1
get click on this block which is the repeat forever
2 :3 8
block now let’s test it by pressing the green flag and off it goes fantastic so
2 :4 5
it’s moving across the screen but doesn’t quite look realistic enough to suggest that the ball is actually
2 :5 0
rolling so let’s stop that by pressing the red hexagon let’s
2 :5 6
reset so we’re going to go to the yellow category again select the green flag
3 :0 1
block once again go to the blue category and select the turn left block this will
3 :0 9
make it look like the ball is rotating and rolling and then we’re going to go back to the red category and collect
3 :1 6
click on the repeat forever block now when we press the green flag now we can see that the ball is moving across the
3 :2 2
screen and it also looks like it’s rotating or rolling exactly what we’re
3 :2 8
looking for now we’ve coded the ball we now need to
How to code the frog to jump over the ball in ScratchJr when creating a jump game
3 :3 4
code or start to code the Frog so first of all I’m just going to reset the ball position so it’s exactly where we need
3 :4 0
to be on the screen going to go to the add character and then SC scroll down and
3 :4 7
find the Frog where is the
3 :5 3
Frog there it is select the Frog click the tick and
3 :5 9
there is our frog once again I’m going to hold on the Frog and move it across so it’s in the right position in line
4 :0 7
with the ball at this point you can use your grid lines to give you some guidance because the frog is selected um
4 :1 5
it identifies the coordinates of the Frog on the grid so the Frog on the
4 :2 1
vertical axis is at four so if I click on the ball the ball is actually on three you can see so let’s lift that up
4 :2 8
slightly now the Frog and ball are both in line I’m going to turn the grids off
4 :3 3
for now so we can start to coat so what we want the Frog to do is to hop over
4 :3 8
the ball that involves the Frog hopping upwards and then moving to the right so
4 :4 5
we don’t want the Frog to do that on the green flag we want the Frog to do that
4 :5 0
every time we press them on the screen so we go to the yellow category and
4 :5 6
select the start on touch block so that means that the program will start or the
5 :0 2
code will start that we now code every time we press the Frog next we’re going to go to the movement block section and
5 :1 0
we’re going to select the Hop block and connect that there then we’re going to
5 :1 6
go to the um red category and select the end block because once the Frog hops we
5 :2 3
just want the code to stop now we need to think about how high
5 :2 9
we want the um frog to go so once again we can turn on turn on our grid and we
5 :3 4
can see the code the frog is currently at four on the vertical axis let’s get it to 1 0 so it makes a nice big jump so
5 :4 2
we’re going to click the number just below the block the number pad appears and we’re going to change the two to a
5 :4 9
six and you can see that the number there changes to a six
5 :5 5
fantastic so let’s test this see if it works we’re going to press the green flag leg and I’m going to Tap the Frog
6 :0 2
and it jumps up great so when the ball comes towards the Frog press it and it
6 :0 7
jumps up great but not only do we want the Frog to jump up we want it to jump over the ball and then reset it itself
6 :1 5
back in the start position so let’s stop that there reset and let’s add some more code so I
6 :2 3
go back to the yellow section again press on the start on tap block go to
6 :2 9
the blue category again again select the move right block
6 :3 6
because you want the Frog to jump up and then move right and then land when it
6 :4 2
lands we want the Frog to weight and then move back to its start
6 :4 9
position so I’m using the weight block for that in the orange category then I want
6 :5 5
the Frog to move back to its start position so I’m going to add a left move
7 :0 1
block there and then I want the Frog to face the right way again so I’m going to
7 :0 6
add a move right block and then we want that to end so let’s change some of the numbers
7 :1 4
we want the Frog to jump four to the right and then move back
7 :2 3
five and then move forward again so let’s give that a go go so I
7 :3 0
press the green flag to start the ball moving I’m ready to press the Frog I tap the Frog it jumps over the ball moves
7 :3 7
back to its start position fantastic let’s stop that and
7 :4 3
reset everything now we have to add the game element to it and what that means is when the ball hits the frog the frog
How to code the frog to disappear when the ball touches it when creating a jump game
7 :4 9
dies the game ends to do this we have to add an additional character that represents the Frog dying and also an
7 :5 6
additional background screen that represents the end of game first we’re just going to move this code up a little
8 :0 2
bit cuz we are going to add some extra code and I want there to be enough space next we’re going to go to the yellow
8 :0 8
category and click on the start on bump block and drag that down what that means
8 :1 5
is when the Frog character is touched by the ball or to be fair any other character an action will start then we
8 :2 2
want to go to the purple category and go pull down the hide block so that means
8 :2 9
when a character touches the frog in this case it will be the ball the Frog will
8 :3 6
disappear let’s try that out so the ball comes across touches the
8 :4 2
frog and the Frog disappears fantastic let’s stop the code and reset so what we
How to code the second ‘shocked’ frog to appear once the first has disappeared in ScratchJr when creating a jump game
8 :4 7
want to happen when this frog disappears we want the frog that represents the
8 :5 2
frog has been touched to appear so to do that I add an extra character
9 :0 0
which will be the Frog again but instead of adding the Frog straight away I’m going to go to the paint function and
How to edit a character in ScratchJr
9 :0 5
slightly alter this frog so it looks different to the one we’re using in the actual game so I’m going to add a circle
9 :1 2
around the mouth to look like the frog is in shock so I select the circle
9 :1 8
creation function there and I’m going to create a circle like that just where
9 :2 6
the mouth is by pressing on and dragging and creating the circle I want to fill
9 :3 1
that circle with black so it looks like the Frog’s mouth is open so I go to the fill function there make sure black is
9 :3 8
selected and then carefully press on the circle and then
9 :4 3
press the tick to select and there you can see my additional frog that looks
9 :5 0
like it’s shocked by being hit by the ball has appeared now we don’t want this frog the shocked frog to be there all
9 :5 8
the time we want it to to appear once the first frog we’re using gets touched
1 0 :0 4
by the ball so to do that we’re going to select the appear
1 0 :1 0
block to make the Frog appear when we need it to but we need to Signal when it
1 0 :1 5
appears we’re not going to use any of the yellow blocks we’ve used before because we don’t want it to start when
1 0 :2 1
the green flag is pressed and we don’t want to start it to appear when it is touched so instead what we’re going to
1 0 :2 7
do we’re going to use the start on message block and send message blocks to
1 0 :3 3
allow this to happen so to do this I’m going to go back to our first frog so going back to our code that will make
1 0 :3 9
the Frog disappear when the ball touches it we want to add something to this code here to send a message for our second
1 0 :4 7
frog to appear so we’re going to do that by using the send start message block
1 0 :5 4
which is this one here so what that is saying is when this happens it’s going
1 0 :5 9
to send a message to our second
1 1 :0 6
frog to appear before we start we do need to hide this second frog so we’ve
1 1 :1 1
got the second frog selected I’m going to go back to my purle
1 1 :1 6
category select the hide block but do not connect it to anything and just press it that will
1 1 :2 3
start with the actual frog hidden okay let’s give it a
1 1 :3 1
crack so the ball comes along it touches the frog and the second frog appears
1 1 :4 1
fantastic now what we want to do is create an end of game screen and code
1 1 :4 6
the game so it goes from the second frog appearing to the end of game screen so
How to create and add an end of game ‘game over’ screen in ScratchJr when creating a jump game
1 1 :5 2
let’s start by adding a second screen by pressing on the plus button here we’ll delete the cat CU we don’t need then for
1 1 :5 9
this we now want to change the background so let’s click on the change background button
1 2 :0 5
there and we can go to the blank background and press on the paint button
1 2 :1 1
there because we want to create just a one colored screen here so the fill
1 2 :1 7
button is already selected as is the black color so I’m just going to click onto there and that makes the whole of
1 2 :2 3
the background black I’m then going to press tick and there’s our black
1 2 :2 8
background I want to add game over as some text so I’m going to click on the
1 2 :3 3
text button there type game
1 2 :4 3
over and I want to make it a bit bigger so I’m going to select the size button there and click on the biggest button
1 2 :5 2
and there it is I’m going to bring it down we can see that that’s not really clear because the background color and
1 2 :5 8
the text color is is the same so I click on the text again click on the paint pop
1 3 :0 3
and now I can choose any color I wish white will most probably stand out the best and then I’ll click off and there
1 3 :0 9
we go I’d like to also add the shocked frog to this background so I click on
1 3 :1 7
the add character button there and it’s already at the top there as a character
1 3 :2 2
I created click on the tick button drag it down to there and there is our end of
1 3 :2 9
game screen to code the program so that once the frog has been touched by the
1 3 :3 5
ball the second frog has appeared and then we access this end of game screen I need to go back to my first screen and
1 3 :4 4
to my second frog which is the shocked frog and continue to code it so currently we’ve got once the orange
1 3 :5 1
message is received this frog appears so next what I want to happen is I
1 3 :5 7
want the Frog to wait for 2 /1 0 of a
1 4 :0 2
second using the weight block and then I want this program to send me to the end
1 4 :1 1
of game screen so I’m going to go to the red category again and you can see here that a
1 4 :1 7
new block has appeared I select that block drag it
1 4 :2 3
down and connect it to my code you can see inside this block is once this code
1 4 :2 9
has been executed and ended it sends me to this new background which is here if
1 4 :3 4
we have multiple backgrounds you get to choose and we’ll look at that in in a
1 4 :4 0
moment so let’s reset our code you can see there that the second frog has now
1 4 :4 6
disappeared I’m just going to test it by pressing the green flag let the ball hit
1 4 :5 2
the Frog our second frog appears and it sends us to our game over screen so
1 4 :5 7
let’s go back to our first first screen again reset everything now let’s test
1 5 :0 4
the game in full by getting the Frog to jump as well so I pressed the green flag to start I press the Frog to jump it
1 5 :1 2
touched the ball so the game is over let’s reset again let’s see if I can successfully get over the ball this time
1 5 :1 8
press the green flag press the Frog it’s over moves
1 5 :2 4
itself back into position now ready to go again fantastic okay let’s stop that
1 5 :3 0
let’s reset and let’s look to play this on full screen by pressing the full screen
1 5 :3 6
button the green flag is still there so when I’m ready to go I press the green flag the ball starts to move I tap the
1 5 :4 4
Frog to jump over and it resets itself in its original position let’s try that one more time yes I’m over there this
1 5 :5 1
time I’m going to let the ball hit the Frog second frog appears and I go to my game over screen fantastic and if I want
1 5 :5 9
play again I just press the left button here press the green flag to start again
1 6 :0 4
and off I go and then if anytime I want to stop the game I just press the red hexagon if
1 6 :1 1
I want to access my code again I press the small but screen button there and it resets it back to the small screen where
1 6 :1 8
I can edit any of my code for any of my characters congratulations you’ve made
1 6 :2 3
the first version of the game next we’re going to add extra features including turning the Frog into a ghost adding a
1 6 :2 9
scoreboard and adding a winner screen for older children to try or with your guidance the 5 -year-old now we’re going
1 6 :3 6
to add an extra part to the end of game process where we’re going to turn the
1 6 :4 2
Frog into a ghost once they’ve been touched by the ball and then they will float up to the sky to do this we’re
1 6 :4 8
going to add an additional screen so we’re going to go to the plus button again once again delete the
1 6 :5 5
cat add the background part which will be the farm again cuz we want
1 7 :0 0
consistency and there we go now we want to add an extra character it’s going to be a frog again but we’re going to alter
1 7 :0 6
the Frog so we’re going to go to the plus button once again scroll down find the Frog but instead of pressing the
1 7 :1 3
tick button we’re going to press the paint button there to edit it now I’m going to turn the green parts of the
1 7 :1 9
Frog white so my fill button is already pressed I’m going to click onto the
1 7 :2 5
white color there carefully touch
1 7 :3 0
the in like the green feel of the Frog not the outline and that turns the Frog
1 7 :3 5
white I’m now going to press the tick button to select and there we can see we’ve got our frog now to make it a
1 7 :4 2
little bit more special I want to increase the size of the Frog so first of all I’m just going to go to the purple category press the select the
1 7 :5 0
increase size block and press it a few times and that that will increase the
1 7 :5 6
size of our character I don’t need this part anymore so I just get rid of it now I’m going to code the Ghost frog to
1 8 :0 2
float up into the sky so we’re starting the yellow category get a green flag I’m
1 8 :0 7
then going to select the blue category and the upwards block CU I want the
1 8 :1 3
Ghost frog to go upwards I want this to happen a number of times so I’m going to go to the orange category and select the
1 8 :1 9
repeat block I want the upwards block to be repeated four times which is already there so I don’t need to change any of
1 8 :2 5
the settings I then want the Ghost frog to disappear so I go to the purple category and get the
1 8 :3 3
disappear block so what that means is the Frog will go upwards and then when it gets to a certain height disappear I
1 8 :4 0
then want the program to
1 8 :4 6
wait I’m going to have that wait for 5 1 0 of a second so I don’t want it to be too long and then we’re going to move to the
1 8 :5 5
game over screen that we created before I don’t only want the Frog to go upwards
1 9 :0 2
I want the Frog To Shimmy and rotate slightly so I’m going to add some extra code so I’m going to go back to the
1 9 :0 8
green flag select that I’m going to go back to my move blocks and I want the move right
1 9 :1 5
block and the move left block so the Ghost frog will sort of shimmy left to right again I’m going to repeat this
1 9 :2 3
code so I get the repeat block I then want that to end so I just get the red
1 9 :3 0
end of codee block let’s try that and see what
1 9 :3 5
happens fantastic brilliant and then it goes to the game over screen absolutely
1 9 :4 0
perfect we now need to amend the previous code that we created so that when the ball touches the frog and the
1 9 :4 7
second frog appears then that is connected to our Ghost frog so I’ll go back to our first screen
1 9 :5 4
there I’m now going to remove this go to page block and add this one here
2 0 :0 3
which is to the third page which is the third we just third page we just created with the Ghost
2 0 :1 0
frog let’s give it a test green flag to start ball touches the Frog second frog
2 0 :1 8
appears and then we go to our Ghost frog and it goes to our game over screen fantastic let’s see that on full screen
2 0 :2 4
so we’ll go back to our original screen reset full screen green flag to go let’s see
2 0 :3 2
if I can jump over once just to make sure it’s all still working fantastic frog resets himself this time I make a
2 0 :3 8
mistake hit the ball second frog appears Ghost frog then to our go over screen
2 0 :4 4
okay let’s now add a scoreboard so we’re going to make the screen small again go back to our Ed editing area go back to
2 0 :5 1
our first page and this is where we’re going to add the scoreboard to add the scoreboard we’re going to need to do a number of things we’re going to have to
How to code a score board that automatically updates in ScratchJr when creating a jump game
2 0 :5 7
add some numbers and some sort of shape to highlight what
2 1 :0 3
our current score is we then need to connect the action of the Frog successfully jumping over the ball to
2 1 :1 0
moving along the scoreboard first things first let’s reset our screen now we need to make sure that the
2 1 :1 7
numbers we add are high enough so that the frog doesn’t touch them because
2 1 :2 3
remember our frog has code is coded to disappear every time it touches another
2 1 :2 9
character that isn’t exclusively the ball it can be anything so as we did
2 1 :3 5
with our game over screen let’s press on the text button and add a
2 1 :4 1
number we’re going to make it as big as we can and then there’s our number one
2 1 :4 9
we’re going to move that to the left hand side of the screen and there’s our
2 1 :5 4
number one I’m then going to add the rest of the numbers
2 2 :0 1
making sure they’re the same
2 2 :1 8
size every time I move them next to each other so they’re in a line
2 2 :3 1
remember they’re high enough so that the Frog won’t touch them when it jumps
2 2 :4 6
up I am actually also going to add a zero because we need somewhere to
2 2 :5 4
start now we need to add a shape to highlight what our current scories so I’m going to go to the add character
2 3 :0 1
button to the blank character option press the paint button and now I can
2 3 :0 8
create my own character from scratch I’m going to create a circle that goes around the number and moves along as we
2 3 :1 5
get more score so I’m going to click on the create Circle button um I’m going
2 3 :2 2
to change slightly change the thickness of the line I’m going to press my finger
2 3 :2 7
on here and hold it and there is my circle that is actually white at the moment so I’m going to undo
2 3 :3 4
that cuz I’ve made a mistake and click on red I’d like a red circle so
2 3 :4 3
again create my circle I then press tick button and there is my circle now I’m
2 3 :5 0
going to move it over to here and just check it’s big enough yeah
2 3 :5 6
that was good if it wasn’t all I need to do cuz it is a character is go to here
2 4 :0 2
and I can make it bigger or similarly
2 4 :1 2
smaller perfect now I’m going to remove these two blocks I don’t need them anymore I’m going to
2 4 :1 7
[Music] move my circle to the start point where I want it to start now I need to start
2 4 :2 4
to think about how am I going to move it across so I go back to my frog and what
2 4 :3 1
I want to do every time the Frog successfully jumps over the ball I want
2 4 :3 7
a message to be sent to my circle character to move along a certain number
2 4 :4 2
of squares so to do that I need to add an extra send message block into this
2 4 :4 8
code so I go back to my yellow category here you can see
2 4 :5 4
there’s our send and receive blocks however we currently are using one to
2 5 :0 0
execute another function so I can
2 5 :0 5
change I can change this by pressing that drop down menu to a red send
2 5 :1 2
message block I add I add that to here so what that is
2 5 :1 8
saying every time the Frog successfully jumps over the ball send a
2 5 :2 5
message to this character which is the circle and we change that
2 5 :3 1
to Red so it corresponds with the message being sent move
2 5 :3 8
across one square now I’m going to need to test this because I don’t know how many squares I need to move across to
2 5 :4 5
get the circle from zero to one so that’s not enough so let’s reset
2 5 :5 2
that let’s change that to actually use our grid so we’re currently on
2 5 :5 8
two one is at about five so let’s say let’s move that three along Let’s test
2 6 :1 4
that so now we’re able to move the circle along that indicates what score
2 6 :2 0
we’re on or how many jumps we’ve made now let’s test it let’s turn the grid off let’s
2 6 :2 6
reset let’s start here we go brilliant so that’s
2 6 :3 6
one two oh touched
2 6 :4 3
it game over fantastic let’s now look to test that full screen so we go back to
2 6 :4 9
our initial page reset Everything full
2 6 :5 6
screen green to start
2 7 :0 9
brilliant fantastic now this time I make a mistake hit the
2 7 :1 4
ball game over brilliant now we need to add a screen if we win the game and get
How to add a winners screen when a certain score is achieved in ScratchJr when creating a jump game
2 7 :2 0
to five jumps so let’s go back to our code so what we do
2 7 :2 6
is we go to our add extra page delete the
2 7 :3 3
cat go to add a character go to the blank character option and paint so I
2 7 :3 9
can create my own I’m going to create a circle and now what I’m going to do I’m
2 7 :4 5
going to press the camera button here and press inside of circle
2 7 :5 1
that creates this option where we can create a photo of ourselves so I’m going to give a thumbs up and then press the
2 8 :0 1
button and there’s my thumbs up well done photo I then press the tick button
2 8 :0 7
and there it is I want to make that bigger because you’re a winner that’s really important that we congratulate
2 8 :1 4
you so I go to my purple category and my
2 8 :2 0
increased size block and press that a few times I’m going to bring that down slightly I like some text on there as
2 8 :2 7
well so I press the text button
2 8 :3 3
and type winner an exclamation mark and let’s see
2 8 :3 9
how big I can make that fantastic okay there we go let’s put that in the center
2 8 :4 4
and there we go so I’ll go back to my first screen I’m now going to code the
2 8 :5 0
red circle character the character that represents what score I have with the
2 8 :5 6
winner screen so how I’m going to do that is I need to add an extra character next to the five and when the red circle
2 9 :0 3
touches that it will go to the winner screen so we need to add an extra character so I go to the plus button
2 9 :0 9
here scroll down I think I’d like a star there we go then I press the tick to
2 9 :1 6
select it there’s a star it’s a little small at the moment so I go to the purple car um category again and add the
2 9 :2 4
increased size block and let’s press that a few times fantastic I want to move this now
2 9 :3 2
over to next to the five now that’s a bit big now so I’m going to get the
2 9 :3 8
reduced size character block and press that like that there we go fantastic that’s perfect exactly the right size I
2 9 :4 4
want now what I want to happen is when the red circle touches that star we go
2 9 :5 1
to the winner screen so I go back to my red circle character I go to my yellow
2 9 :5 8
category start on bump because when that character bumps into the star I want the
3 0 :0 5
screen to move to the winner
3 0 :1 0
screen now it’s a little trickier to test this code because I’ve got to make five successful jumps so that the red
3 0 :1 7
circle touches the star and that sends sends us to the winner screen so let’s try no pressure so green flag to start
3 0 :2 5
here we go
3 0 :3 2
one two three no
3 0 :4 0
pressure four here we go
3 0 :4 7
five there we go fantastic we did it so let’s go back and try that on full screen now so we go back to our original
3 0 :5 3
screen reset Everything full screen here we go
3 1 :0 6
one two
3 1 :1 5
three four five fantastic winner and
3 1 :2 4
let’s try that again but this
3 1 :3 2
time we’re going to not
3 1 :4 2
win brilliant stuff and if you need to make any changes or you want to add any bits go back to uh the edit area any of
3 1 :5 0
your pages to any of your characters and made make any changes that you need well done
