The goal of this website is to inform, rather than entertain adults, so they can support the progress of the children.

Please note, I have created this website as this information doesn’t easily fit on Class Dojo, the normal platform I use to communicate with the parents of the children in my class. This means that the content posted is based on my class’s needs and current place in our curriculum.

Parents outside of Rabbit Class are more than welcome to use this content to support their children learning at home, however I will not be taking requests to create specific videos. The children of Rabbit class are my priority.

Sentence Writing

Here is our sentence writing exercise for today.

The correct order for the words is “Greens growing in the soil.”.

Before starting please ask the children to tell you the three things they need to write a sentence (1. Capital letter at the start, 2. Finger spaces, 3. A full stop at the end.).

Ideas for a phonically decodable extra sentence the children could attempt to write with support from you and their sound mats are:

• The greens have no pot.
• The stems are long.
• The soil is black.
• I can see the roots.

Maths

Today we have a special guest in our maths video. You will need 20 scrunched up pieces of paper, a bucket or bowl plus a piece of paper and something to write with.

You may also want to use your number line for reference.

Today’s phonics session includes both reading and writing activities, so please have a pencil and paper ready.

Sentence Writing

Before starting please ask the children to tell you the three things they need to write a sentence (1. Capital letter at the start, 2. Finger spaces, 3. A full stop at the end.).

Ideas for a phonically decodable extra sentence the children could attempt to write with support from you and their sound mats are:

• The men are wet.
• I can see a tent.
• The men are not wearing socks.

Maths

For today’s maths you will need ‘two sets of ace to 10’ playing cards from a pack.

We will be attempting to use these 20 playing cards to build a house of cards (please see video).

If you do not have a pack of cards, it might be fun to try to make the cards. Beer mats also work.

Please discuss with the cards that 20 is two sets of 10. When counting the cards, please use the second ace as 11, the second 2 as 12 etc, stating 10 and 2 is twelve etc.

Ideas for a phonically decodable extra sentence the children could attempt to write with support from you and their sound mats are:

• The box is red.
• There are no jam in the jars.
• The box is big.

Please note, to avoid future issues with copyright and the use of images, plus to make them more fun, my colleague and I will be ‘creating’ some scenes that we will photograph for next week’s sentence writing exercises.

Hello parents and adults,

I hope you all found yesterday’s videos and resources useful. Thank you all for your feedback and comments.

You will have noticed I have linked to some websites in this post. Last night I realised that I maybe infringing some copyright laws, but, as I receive no commercial gain from this website, for now I have just linked to the appropriate website while I look into this potential issue in more detail. If you are reading this and you work at Twinkl or have created the photo of the vet please contact me if I need to take this content down.

I find routine useful, so I am trying to keep the format of these posts similar so that you are familiar with the process and can focus your attention on supporting the children with the ‘content’.

Here are today’s videos and resources relating to the adult led input normally delivered in Rabbit Class:

Phonics

Please note your children will need a pencil and paper for today’s session as it has a writing focus.

Sentence writing:

The resource for today is shown below.

It again links to the sounds (j, v, w, x) that were recapped in the phonics session today. There is no specific video for today’s session, but I have included the guidance video below the image.

The correct order for today’s sentence is “Jazz is visiting the vet.”

Once the children have rearranged the words in the correct order, before they start to write please ask them what the three things they need to remember when writing a sentence i.e. include a capital letter at the start of the sentence, finger spaces between the words and also a full stop at the end of the sentence.

I think there are lots of opportunities for the children to write an extra sentence that relates to this picture. Phonically decodable ideas include:

“Jazz the dog.”

“Jazz is the dog.”

“The vet and the dog”

“The vet has a pen.”

“The vet has a coat on.”

To encourage your child to come up with their own extra sentence you could ask them:

“What else do you see in the picture?”

“Who is Jazz?”

“Who is the lady?”

Here is a reminder of the guidance for taking the child in your care through this activity:

Maths

For today’s maths session you will need your 20 objects and 4 cups/plates/action figures to share them between.

It will also be useful to have the number line you created yesterday, plus some ‘post its’ to cover three of the numbers.

Although you could just watch the video and follow along with me, children learn best when they are actually ‘doing’.

By actually doing the activity you will be taking the child in your care through the three stages of learning maths. Below is the hierarchy of these learning ‘stages’ (with a very simple example).

1. Concrete – this is the actual ‘doing’ e.g. counting 5 candles
2. Pictorial – counting 5 pictures of candles
3. Abstract – representing the five candles by the number ‘5’.

Please notice if you miss the (most important) concrete stage of actually ‘doing’ and just watch the video below, you child will miss an important part of the learning.

Here is today’s maths input. In the video I am asking the children to ‘prove’ their answers. Please give them time to process their thoughts, and ask them extra open questions (using the appropriate 5WH – Who, What, Why, When, Why and How) to help them expand and articulate their reasoning.

Hello parents,

Here is the input videos for today. We are all learning to teach in this way, so please bear with me, I will get better as the weeks go on.

I recommend breaking the day up with these ‘adult led’ activities.

In a normal school day we do phonics at 9am, sentence writing at 11:30am just before lunch and then maths after lunch at about 1:15pm.

Phonics

Here is the phonics video. I have recorded this in a way that allows you to interact with your child. I recommend watching this in full screen mode on a laptop, computer or TV. A tablet could also work, but I think a phone screen will be too small.

This is mainly a reading session today, so there is no need for pencils and paper.

Sentence writing

Here is the resource for today. It links to the sounds (j, v, w, x) that were recapped in the phonics session today. I try to make as many links as I can in the children’s activities to ensure we are constantly recapping and reinforcing learning. There is no specific video for today’s session.

The correct order for today’s sentence is “Jim wins six vans.”

Maths

Today is the start of learning about number 20 (our number of the week).

I normally share all the number hunt photos I have been sent (I will do this on class dojo instead of here) and I ask the children what does 20 mean to them. Sometimes children will say it is their door number, or how old a family member is, they could also say it is on money (i.e. the £20 note). There is no real right answer, we just want the children thinking about numbers in their life and environment.

At the start of the week we also watch the corresponding Numberblocks episode that introduces the number.

Unfortunately the BBC do not put all the Numberblocks episode on Iplayer, so I have to hunt for them on You tube, but they cannot always be found. Below is the best I can manage for now.

As part of our introduction to 20, I would like you to make a number line with your children (see the video and picture below).

Please watch this video with your child, discussing with them the mistakes I initially made in counting the straws.

We will be using this number line throughout this week.

That is all of the input for today.

As I have said above, this took a bit of time for me to put together, but I am confident I will get quicker as I create more.
